Tsarang Villageor Charang village is a picturesque town in Upper Mustang at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level. It is a fabulous town with a couple of monasteries, white-washed houses with prayer flags on the top, along with impressive chhortens.
Where is Tsarang/Charang Village?
Tsarang or Charang is a scenic town in Upper Mustang Lo Gekar Damodar Kunda Rural Municipality. It is the center of the rural municipality and is known for its historical palaces. This Tibetan-influenced village is located at an altitude of 3500 meters (12,000 feet) on the Tibetan Plateau of Upper Mustang.
Upper Mustang is almost semi-arid landscape, even Tsarang has a barren landscape. However, there are abundant numbers of Himalayan poplar trees and they make the village a bit green and with oxygen. The traditional mud-brick houses, narrow alleys, and a ruined fortress offer delightful scenarios in Tsarang village.
Gateway to Luri Gompa and Damodar Kunda
Tsarang/Charang village is a gateway to some of the culturally significant monasteries, caves, and Lakes. Taking a side trip, you will reach Yara, Ghara, and Luri Gompa. Driving further, you will reach Ghuma Thanti and a day hike will take you to the sacred site of Lord Visnu- Damodar Kunda.
Major Attractions
Among the major attractions of the village, lies a huge red monastery, which is a 14th-century-built Gelup sect Gompa. It is the largest Monastery in the Mustang region, which is adorned with murals, loaded woodwork, traditional scriptures, and the images of various deities and Lama inside the monastery. This is the real epitome of the Tibetan Buddhist heritage site and a prosperous Buddhist site in the Himalayas.

People in Tsarang/Charang
The local people of Tsarang/Charang mainly belong to Lo Community, who came to Lomanthang and established their separate Kingdom initially. Lo people are primarily renowned for preserving their cultural uniqueness, vibrant festival celebrations, traditional musical and dances, along with their nature-based lifestyles. Although their language and lifestyles are not as of the people of main stream, they are warm welcoming.
